What will we be learning this week?

English:
  • Continuing with our work about 'past' and 'present' tense.  This week learning the 'present progressive' and 'past progressive'
  • Beginning our writing for Mother's Day as part of our preparations for our forthcoming class assembly
  • Enjoying World Book Day
  • Writing character descriptions
  • Completing a Library Detectives Book Hunt
  • Sharing our favourite books
  • Looking at the spelling pattern 'ey' at the end of words such as 'key', 'monkey'
Maths:
  • Recognising a third of a shape, number and quantity
  • Finding a third of a shape, number and quantity
  • Learning about 'Unit Fractions'
  • Telling the time to the o'clock, quarter past, half past and quarter to
  • Finding the difference between 2 numbers using a number line and rounding to the nearest 10
IPC:

  • Continuing with our work all about Florence Nightingale

Special Events this week:
  • We are celebrating World Book Day on Thursday.  Children are invited to come dressed as their favourite book character if they would like to.  They are also encouraged to bring in their favourite book(s) from home to share with their friends
  • Thank you to all those parents who have emailed some pictures for our Class Assembly (as per email sent last week).  If you have not already done so please could you do so by Friday at the very latest if you would like pictures of your child to be included

We all enjoyed wearing our crazy shoes and socks whilst raising money for the NSPCC.



NSPCC Assembly

27th February 2020

We all enjoyed a very special NSPCC assembly when the mascot 'Buddy' came to help us learn about keeping safe and who we can talk to if we need help.  We are very excited for our de-feet charity day tomorrow when we can come to school in crazy socks and footwear.


Mathletics

Congratulations to Oscar who has achieved and Bronze and a Silver Mathletics certificate over the half term holiday.


Orienteering

27th February 2020

We had lots of fun in our P.E. lesson today when we started our new Unit of Work which is Orienteering.  We began by learning the points of the compass and used the phrase 'Naughty elephants squirt water' to help us remember 'North, South, East and West'.  We then worked in teams to read a 'face map' of different P.E. equipment which we had to follow to create the 'face'.  We used hoops, cones, beanbags and coits of different colours.










Celebrating Pancake Day Year 2 Style

25th February 2020

We were all very excited today to discover that we would be enjoying some delicious pancakes.  The catch was it was going to be as part of our Maths lesson.  In order to be able to enjoy a tasty treat we first had to cut our pancake in half and then into quarters.  We cut very carefully to make sure the pieces were equal.  Once we had cut it we quickly discovered that 2 halves make 1 whole, 2 quarters make 1 half and 4 quarters make 1 whole.

English:
  • Spelling pattern /u/ sound spelt 'o' as in 'mother', 'brother' etc
  • Using past and present tens verbs correctly and writing sentences for each
  • Sharing the text 'The Diary of a Wombat'
  • Discuss the purpose of a diary and who the audience might be
  • Writing a diary entry for a fairy tale character
  • Continue with our shared reading of 'The Owl who was afraid of the dark'
  • Continue with our class text 'The Faraway Tree'
Maths:
  • Starting our new unit of work about fractions
  • Making equal parts of shapes and equal quantities
  • Recognise 1/2 of a length, shape and set of objects
  • Use the terms 'numerator' and 'denominator' correctly

Special Events this week:
  • We are due to be going to the woods on Friday afternoon but this will depend on the weather and if the woods are safe following recent storms.  Notes will be put in diaries to confirm if we are going 
  • Thursday 27th February: NSPCC assembly
  • Friday 28th February: De feet bullying NSPC charity day.  For a minimum donation of £2 children are invited to come to school in crazy socks and footwear.  Please ensure footwear s suitable for a busy day at school.

Sorting 3D Shapes

13th February 2020

We all enjoyed working together to sort 3D shapes in lots of different ways.  We looked carefully at their different properties to sort them into groups such as those with curved faces, those with no vertices, those with both curved and flat faces.









NSPCC Charity Day

On Friday 28th February we will be having a charity day to raise money for the NSPCC.  Children are invited to come to school wearing their craziest footwear for a donation of £2.

What will we be learning this week?

English:
  • Looking at different sentence types: statements and commands
  • Identifying imperative verbs in sentences.  Imperative verbs are also known as 'bossy verbs'.  For example, 'cut', 'pull', 'turn', 'finish', 'wash'
  • Writing sentences including imperative verbs
  • Writing instructions for making a Valentines Day craft in order using both time connectives such as 'first', 'next', 'after that', 'finally' and imperatives verbs
  • Continue with our Guided Reading text 'The Owl Who Was Afraid Of The Dark'
  • Continue with our class text 'The Faraway Tree'
Maths:
  • Identifying and naming 3D shapes
  • Counting the number of faces, edges and vertices for 3D shapes
  • Going on a 3D shapes hunt around school and recording using a tally how many different shapes we can find
  • You might be able to do the same at home and see how many different 3D shapes you can spot
  • Sorting 3D shapes according to their properties
  • Making patterns using 3D shapes
  • Recalling facts for 2, 5 and 10 times tables
IPC:
  • Completing our pictures based on the work of Joan Miro recording a favourite memory
  • Learning about a famous event from the past: The Great Fire of London
Important events this week:
  • We break up for half term after school on Friday.  Tea Club is available as normal
  • We return to school on Monday 24th February

Woodland Fun

We all had a great afternoon in the woods.  We were busy collecting sticks to make picture frames and enjoyed playing together.

Stained Glass Windows

In R.E. this half term we have been learning all about places of worship.  We have looked at different features of churches and the significance of stained glass windows.  We learnt what the different colours represent and made some of our own.


Pirate Dancing in P.E.
